There are many substances that are considered drugs or have similar properties. Drugs include cocaine, cannabis, ecstasy, heroin, synthetic cannabinoids (bonzai), drugs of abuse (ketamine, etc.), amphetamines, methamphetamines, and many new psychoactive substances. Substance abuse leads to increased disease, higher healthcare costs, and mortality.

Evaluating the forensic report regarding the death of 4-year-old Saliha Çakır in Yeşilhisar district of Kayseri, who died from poisoning after eating pomegranates sprayed with pesticides, the Chief Physician of the State Hospital and Emergency Medicine Clinic Specialist Assoc. Dr. İsmail Altıntop said, "Many pesticides used in agriculture, including organophosphorus, can cause deaths. If you are afraid of contamination while consuming fruits and vegetables, you can wash them with plenty of water, and sometimes even with soap."
